Care for the Disabled Orphans – FuJian Medical University’s New Dentistry / Oral Care for Disabled Orphans Project

On the morning of October 25th, 2015, the Stomatology Hospital of FuJian Medical University started a welfare project for the comprehensive prevention of oral disease in disabled orphans. More than a dozen doctors and nurses from the hospital arrived at our FuZhou Hope House to conduct a detailed check-up, cavity sealant procedures, sealing of cracks and dents, fluoride cleaning, as well as other disease prevention procedures. In addition, the staff made sure to educate both the children and the house parents on general dental health as well as prevention of dental disease.

It is reported that in order to better understand the current dental and oral condition of disabled orphans and to improve that status, making up for previous lack of oral health services, leading to concerning dental defects, the China Oral Health Foundation launched the Comprehensive Orphan Oral Disease Prevention Project in FuJian, affiliating with the FuJian Medical University, specifically the Dental Disease Prevention Center of the Stomatology Hospital, which is responsible for the project.

John even had a fissure sealant procedure completed.

Per doctor’s examination feedback, it was determined that John had 2 overlapping teeth, requiring a future tooth extraction.  Luke has several broken teeth also requiring future treatment.  One of Graham’s front teeth hurts when he eats, possibly indicatively injured nerve endings from tooth decay, also requiring future treatment. Director Fan has stated she will contact the Children’s Welfare Institute leaders to confirm that the children will have their oral illnesses treated at the designated, specified hospitals.

Joyful English Summer Camp

From July 30th until August 7th, the children enjoyed a wonderful, nine-day, English summer camp with American teachers.  No matter whether they were indoors or outdoors, they were able to learn something new everyday.  Their activities included painting, singing, crafts, new methods of learning, etc., filling each child’s heart with blessed joy.

SarahTeachEnglish

Miss Sarah teaches her group of small children how to say the English names of various fruits. Each child will receive a toy fruit and and repeat the English word, taking turns holding the models. Since the children get to directly touch what is being taught, the learning experience is significantly more efficient and enjoyable.

SheMing (a boy who used to living in our orphanage but has now been adopted by an American family) mother, sister, Larissa, and Sarah taught the kids to sing, the song was about how the wise man builds his house upon the rock, while the foolish man builds his house upon the sand. Seeing the teachers so joyfully singing the songs, the kids joined in on the fun, imitating the teachers. The American teachers taught the kids so many great songs, many kids from the 201 home were still singing “11 monkeys on the bed” several days after the teachers had left. Even though they didn’t fully understand all the lyrics, the kids sang so happily so in an engaged manner, so that they will always remember these days with fondness.

Awesome game of water balloons: After the balloons were filled with water, the teachers stood by the wall waiting to be hit by the lined-up students. The teachers are allowed to run within a certain range, but if they get hit, they’ll get really wet! However, if the teacher catches the ball, they’re allowed to throw it back. The kids excitedly grabbed their balls, understanding the essence of speed, whilst enjoying the thrill of hitting their target.

The older children’s class was equally lively and interesting for the children whose basic English was stable. The teachers were able to share some history of the United States and explain a little of the American culture.

Funny Hats

The kids also learn origami! Under loving tutelage, the kids were able to transform ordinary paper into cute little hats! See, don’t they look particularly dashing?

Limbo

The fun continues with games of limbo, exercising limb coordination and agility as the bar fluctuates up and down. Due to the intense challenge of this game, all winners were greatly applauded by both students and teachers at their success.

The lasting impression that these teachers made on the children was definitely one of humor, fun, and versatility. Here the teachers perform an intriguing, melodramatic skit that all the kids enjoyed, joy plastered all over the faces.

Mr. Wong Zhong Quan: Doing My Job Wholeheartedly Is An Obligation

Mr. Wong’s unique skills include cutting, slicing, and flipping vegetables at lightning speed, simultaneously looking at and chatting with people.

There is no argument among the people living in the Guangling Children’s Home, adults or kids, over the statement that Mr.Wong’s cooking is awesome! He strikes a nearly perfect balance among techniques, color, and nutrition, as well as styles in his cooking. Needless to say, the kids love his cooking. Even the new staff member, Shi Huili, who doesn’t eat much at all due to her sickness now has a bigger appetite for his cooking.

There are some samples of the weekly menu Mr. Wong created. What do you think? Isn’t his handwriting neat?

Owing to his experience of serving in the military, cooking 3 meals every day for 30 plus soldiers, he has no problem doing everything in the kitchen by himself. He changes the menu on a weekly basis to meet the health needs and tastes of the kids. The variety and variation of the menu often attracts the kids to want to find out what will be served for the next day or two. They want to know in advance, so they can wait for their favorite meal expectantly.

Besides being a great cook, Mr. Wong is quite skilled in another area, that is in giving haircuts. The public school which our kids attend have strict requirements for hair style. It can be summed up as long hair is not allowed, applying to both boys and girls. Getting a haircut costs about 10 yuan per child in a typical barber shop, a big expenditure for the Children’s Home. So Mr. Wong took up another job: giving the kids’ their haircuts. Don’t underestimate his ability in this job; he actually enjoys quite a fine reputation for his excellence in this skill. He started to learn the skill when he was only 15. After joining the military at 18, he cut the hair for all soldiers in his unit. Before coming to the Children’s Home, he also gave free haircuts to his colleagues at the previous workplace. One of the colleagues even wrote a poem paying tribute to his excellent skills and heart of service.

Mr. Wong is an observant and caring uncle in the eyes of the kids. If a kid is recently picky with food, or if a kid eats too much and too fast, Mr. Wong can spot it immediately. He often gives reminders to the kids while they are eating, such as not to waste food, only get what you can eat, wash hands before eating, dry the chopsticks and spoons after cleaning, don’t use too much dish detergent, etc. Kind and caring reminders like these are said by him all the time.

Kids often play board games and learn tricks from Mr. Wong. Mr. Wong gives the kids haircuts in his spare time.

When asked how he views his current job, its meaning and value, Mr. Wong answered with a smile, “Whatever job I hold, when it is my responsibility, I give it my best. It is simply an obligation to do it wholeheartedly. ”

Chinese of the Month: August 2014

Here is the first of a new series – once each month we’ll be putting up a new picture with a Chinese word in it.  These pictures are great for desktop wallpapers as well as a quick Chinese aid!

Pictured are Mr. and Mrs. Zhao, houseparents in Fuzhou, along with their family.  These workers are what everything Living Hope does is based upon, and the happy faces at the beach say all we need to know about their results!
